The Tk 10 kg rice under the government’s ‘food-friendly programme’ is rotten, malodorous and worm in that unsuitable for eating, alleged the beneficiaries in Kurigram's Rajarhat upazila.

The Tk 10 kg rice is being given as per the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's pledge to ensure food for the people who lost their jobs due to the novel coronavirus.

Some 23 dealers started selling Tk 10 kg rice among around 11,827 card holders in seven unions under the upazila since April 7.

The beneficiaries alleged that they found the rice rotten, malodorous, and worm eaten after they collected a 30-kg sack at Tk 300 each. Many of them faced harassment by the dealers when they went to return the rice.

Rashedul Islam, resident of Monoswar village under Bidyananda union, collected the rice from dealer Mofizul Islam and later went to give back the same as it was not suitable for eating.

Dealer Mofizul threatened Rahedul to hand over him to police when he approached the former to take back the rice complaining it was rotten and worm eaten, Rahedul said.

Asked the dealer, he said such sacks of rice were provided from the upazila food warehouse. If the rice is not taken back by the authorities, they have to count huge losses, he added.

About this, upazila food warehouse official Abdul Awal said they did not provide rotten rice but a few number of sacks may have such rice that were at the bottom in the warehouse.

Upazila food committee president and upazila nirbahi officer Md Zobair Hossain said they received such allegation, and legal action would be taken after investigation.
