Peoples Time Desk
Director of NRB Bank Ltd M Badiuzzaman has been accused of amassing huge wealth through corruption and money laundering. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating the matter, but he could not be produced before the anti-graft body even after issuing several letters.
It was learnt that ACC in September sought the assets and banks account details of M Badiuzzaman and his two wives---Nasreen Zaman and Touhida Sultana. The notice asked them to submit their wealth statement to the ACC within 21 working days of receipt of the notice. Sources said though M Badiuzzaman has assets worth more than Tk 3.50 billion, he does not have any income tax file. He only has an e-TIN which was opened in 2014 for running a business.
M Badiuzzaman has not submitted tax return to NBR, sources said. According to the preliminary investigation of the ACC, Badiuzzaman has an industrial park on 148 bighas of land worth about Tk 100 million in Bhaluka of Mymensingh district, sources said. Besides, he has a nine-storey residential building built on 11 acres of land at Jagannathpur in Joar Sahara Mouza with an estimated value of around Tk 150 million. He also owns several plots, flats and buildings in Bashundhara, Baridhara and Banani.
In addition to land and houses, M Badiuzzaman bought shares of Advance Home and Phoenix Insurance and other companies with the ill-gotten wealth. The ACC also has received information of his wealth of Tk 3.52 billion from unknown sources.
